A Returning Student

Last night, Vivian walked through the door and returned to sewing class! She has not been in sewing class for quite a while, but life is busy when you are 16. Vivian was the first of my students to make her 8th grade dance dress...and it was lovely. This time, we are making her prom dress. I am so excited!

Jennifer's Jacket

Another well done project! Again, I took the picture before the hem was finished. I just get so excited when my students complete something fabulous!

Updated Sewing Circle

There are many references to sewing circles throughout history. Women getting together to make or mend items of clothing all while sharing life experiences. Sometimes, that is how our sewing class is. It is not in a home, and we are focused on our own progress, but, there are different generations of women (sometimes a man) and we share stories of children, grandchildren, working, husbands, relationships, life, and death. We may not be with these people for a long period of time, but each one has something to offer to the other people in the group. Sure, I teach sewing, but I learn so much from all the students I teach. I hope they have the same type of experience.

Barb's Ghost

Barb is another teacher at the Sewing Center and she was looking for a project for her teenagers. She came up with this ghost pattern that she adapted from a woodworking pattern. Isn't it cute? And it is just genius how she kept the ghost transparent!

By the way, Barb was the organizer of the fashion show we had to raise money for ovarian cancer research--and she is a survivor.

Chair Covers

White upholstery chairs and four kids do not get along. I was not ready to recover the chairs and I had some upholstery fabric that matched my dining room in my fabric stash. A simple cover that did not use a lot of fabric was what I wanted. I was going to add fringe but the gold sequin matched perfectly. And, honestly, how many people have sequin on their chair covers? I think they look cool. So much for washing the covers.

Projects in the works

Now that fall is here, I have more students and more projects. Here's what's going on:

Raggedy Ann
Poodle skirt, red with black lace
Cecilia is coming to fix her outfit and finally get the waistband done on her pants
Ashley's dress is coming along
Ann and Eileen are coming back to sew (can't wait to see what they will work on)
Soon, Edie will be back to make another suit
